The Grand Canyon State

Arizona is most widely known for a particular item on the Places I Must Visit Before I Die bucket list — the colossal Grand Canyon. The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is the primary gateway and its extent is just as grand as the distance to reach it — 3 and a half hours from Phoenix and well over 4 from Las Vegas.

An Unrivalled Behemoth

Numerous spacious drive-ins and hiking lookouts line the nearly 40 kilometre-long Desert View Drive portion of State Route 64 within the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, offering spectacular and breathtaking panoramic views as far as the horizon in several directions. The unimaginable scale of this behemoth simply cannot be overstated.

The Canadian Shield

Often subtle in its presence yet unmistakable in its experience is the exposed, multi-billion-year-old [1] bedrock of the North American continent – the Canadian Shield. Hundreds of millions of hectares [1] filled with exposed granite, boreal forest, unnamed lakes, and remote rivers make for stunning roadside scenery, sparse human settlement, and abundant recreation.

Limitless Road Trips

Owing to the vast extent of the Shield – covering nearly half of Canada from the St. Lawrence Lowlands all the way up to the Arctic [1], and a small portion of the northern contiguous United States [2] – the hundreds of thousands of kilometres of roads paved in asphalt, gravel, and dirt through largely uninhabited wilderness sets an extensive and daring road map for adventurous, limitless, and uncompromisingly scenic road trips.

Fabulous Las Vegas

Very few places in the world can rival the sensory overload, atmosphere, and electricity of Las Vegas [3]. Multiple major league sporting venues, dozens of electric casinos and meticulously-themed hotels, kilometres of intense visual and auditory experiences, and more luminance than in a night photographer's wildest dreams – it's a giant, 24-hour desert-dwelling amusement park the size of a small city.

A Paradoxical Oasis

Vegas is a paradoxical combination of sheer density and scale with meteorological inhospitability and geographic isolation. Most entertainment epicenters are surrounded by abundant human settlement and road networks that are exceptionally well connected. By contrast, this metropolis is completely surrounded by incredibly hot and sparsely-populated Mojave Desert and hours-long driving distances from any similarly-sized metropolis.
