Evolution of the Modern Muscle Car

Dodge officially announced the discontinuation of the V8-powered Charger and Challenger at the end of 2023 [1], marking the beginning of a significant shift away from the traditional powerful and large V8 engine. While Dodge wasn't the first to reimagine the muscle car for the modern era, it rode its wave of popularity with the two models starting in the mid to late 2000s.

Camaro is Next; Mustang Will Live On

The Chevrolet Camaro was next to be discontinued after the 2024 model year [2], while the opposite has been reported about the Ford Mustang [3]. It will be interesting to see how the V8 Mustang will fare with talks about the next chapter for these types of vehicles: the electric muscle car.

What Happened to Sedans?

It might be surprising news to many but automakers in the US and Canada have discontinued the production of many compact, mid-size, and full-size cars. The reason? A significant rise in the popularity of utility vehicles such as SUVs, crossovers, and pickup trucks [4]. Sports cars remain in production as they are in a unique vehicle segment but SUVs alone now account for over 50% of the market share for passenger vehicles [5].

Roomy But Inefficient

As spacious and practical as SUVs and crossovers are, they are considerably heavier than cars which means slower acceleration and higher fuel consumption. They can also be considered excessive if they aren't regularly used to transport larger amounts of cargo or are largely serving as a single or dual-occupant vehicles. Nevertheless, higher fuel prices haven't done much to sway the public's preference away from larger vehicles in North America.

The World of Hypercars

While the names Bugatti and Koenigsegg have been synonymous with record-breaking performance hypercars for many years now, a third and lesser known hypercar automaker has been pushing the hyper-performance envelope with much less publicity and media attention: SSC North America (formerly Shelby Supercars) [6].

The World's Fastest Production Car

Currently the world's fastest production car is the Koenigsegg Agera RS with a top speed of just over 447 km/h, surpassing the previous record of 431 km/h set by the well-known Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport [7]. Faster hypercars do exist but for various reasons do not qualify as production cars.
